Reliable and efficient are just two words to describe the fuel-economy figures for the 2016 Mazda CX-9 crossover. The impressive model has earned itself the title of “Best-in-class Fuel Economy” at an average combined fuel economy of 25 mpg. Presenting an athletic stance that conveys dominance both on and off the road, the 2016 Mazda CX-9 is redefining the definition of efficiency.

Thanks to its lighter Skyactiv platform and turbocharged motor, the midsize sedan achieves an estimated fuel-economy rating of 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway when equipped with front-wheel drive. The CX-9 is powered by a 2.5-liter, turbo I-4 engine, the most powerful member of the Skyactiv-G engine family. Quite the powerhouse, this engine generates 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. With cooled exhaust gas recirculation combustion and Dynamic Pressure Turbo, temperatures are lowered in the engine to prevent knocking and maximize efficiency. These numbers make the new CX-9 the most efficient non-hybrid, three-row, midsize crossover in its class.

Looking for all-wheel drive over front-wheel drive? No problem. With this feature, not only does the model still come 1.2 inches shorter in length and 198 pounds lighter in weight than its predecessor model, but the performance numbers remain exceptional. Should all-wheel drive be preferable, the 2016 Mazda CX-9 averages an impressive 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. By comparison, the 2016 model of the CX-9 is 32 percent more efficient than the first-generation model in either drive mode.

By utilizing Skyactiv technology in the engineering of the CX-9 and other Mazda models, the desire for overall increased environmental performance has been met through reduced fuel consumption and emissions—all without compromising performance. When paired with optional i-ACTIV all-wheel drive, the crossover can sense a loss in traction by measuring road and vehicle conditions more than 200 times per second via 27 sensors: proving to be efficient both on the road and at the pump. Demonstrating that there is no need to pick and choose between driving for work vs. pleasure, advanced technology and luxury features work together in efficient harmony to display Mazda’s core design principles: lightweight, fun to drive, stylish, and purposeful.
