Mazda’s 2017 CX-5 has made countless headlines this year. Its responsive performance, prioritization of passenger comfort, streamlined safety features, smooth ride, and hushed cabin have all garnered the SUV well-deserved awards and attention.
From being an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ every year — including this one — since its 2012 debut and its recognition as the best midsize crossover for families from publications like Parents magazine and Edmunds.com, the 2017 CX-5 have proven its quality time and time again.
This newfound attention can be attributed to the CX-5’s new design. “For 2017, we completely redesigned the CX-5 and made more family-friendly improvements,” said Tetsu Nakazawa, Mazda North American Operations vehicle line manager for the CX-5. “We even engineered the rear doors to open wider from the previous model year to allow for easier child-seat loading and unloading.”

The most recent change in the ever-developing CX-5 is the option to include Mazda’s SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine, an option just added for the last half of 2017. This would make the 2017 CX-5 Mazda’s first vehicle in North America to offer a diesel engine option and also make the CX-5 one of the most fuel efficient in its class.
Other benefits of the diesel engine include the engine’s Natural Sound Smoother and Natural Sound Frequency Control, technologies Mazda incorporated into the engine that reduce diesel knock, giving the vehicle a more quiet, pleasant sound when driving.
“We’re confident this engine offers a smart new option for North American drivers who want both performance and fuel economy,” said Akira Marumoto, Mazda’s Executive Vice President and Representative Director.
