This past summer Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) announced that the 2018 Mazda CX-5 was a “2018 Top Safety Pick+” recipient when providing the optional Adaptive Front-Lighting system by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Currently, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 is the only 2018 IIHS TSP+ in the small SUV category and the 2018 Mazda CX-5 without the adaptive frontal lighting system earned a Top Safety Pick rating.

In order to be eligible for 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+, the vehicle must go through IIHS’s crashworthiness tests and earn appropriate ratings. The vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, along with an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test. Another qualification the vehicle must earn is an advanced or superior rating for a front crash and a good headlight rating.

Several safety features are included within the 2018 Mazda CX-5. Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE safety suite includes a variety of advanced features such as the full-speed Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), which is recently standard on all 2018 CX-5 Touring models and uses milliwave radar at speeds from 18-90 mph to maintain the distance between other vehicles surrounding it.

Also, at speeds below 18 mph, the MRCC implements a forward-facing camera in order to slow down at a standstill and move at stop-and-go speeds without delay. This system collaborates with the Distance Recognition Support System. Additional technological safety features include Smart City Brake Support and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert which is currently a standard on all CX-5 models.

Other safety elements included in the 2018 Mazda CX-5’s i-ACTIVSENSE are High Beam Control, Hill Launch Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane-Keep Assist.

The Mazda CX-5 is on sale now, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $24,150.
