The Mazda Vision Coup was named the “Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year” at the 33rd Festival Automobile International held in Paris, France.
Mazda is no stranger to this award as Mazda RX-Vision earned the same title in 2016. The two winning concept models are said to guide the design of the next generation of Mazda cars, according to the company’s website.
“This car embodies a delicate Japanese aesthetic, and to be recognized here in the ‘City of Art’ two years after RX-VISION was awarded the same honor is very gratifying,” said Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s Managing Executive Officer in charge of Design and Brand Style. “We want to retain our identity as a Japanese brand as we continue making cars with global appeal.”
The winner of the award was chosen by a group of influential designers working in multiple disciplines including fashion, architecture, and other industries.
The model aims to express the essence of Japanese aesthetics, according to Maeda.
After the Vision Coupe’s big reveal in Tokyo last year, it has followed the theme of Mazda’s other production models which have been applauded for their impressive designs. With cues from the Mazda Luce Rotary coupe along with other models, the new model sets the stage for the future of KODO design.
“Vision Coupe uses reflections to express a sense of vitality; the next step for KODO design,” said Maeda.
With its sleek “one motion” body, the vehicle displays a mature rendition of the KODO-Soul of Motion design philosophy.
Since winning this honor, the Vision Coup has also been awarded its second major design award after being named the “Concept Car of the Year.” The award was announced at the 11th-annual Car Design Night which was held during the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
