The winners of the 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK award were announced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it's no surprise the 2019 Mazda6 qualified. When equipped with specific headlights, the midsize car is a formidable contender featuring several safety technologies that give drivers peace of mind while on the road.

Qualifying as a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK is no easy feat. Vehicles must go through a series of trials to earn a "Good" or higher rating before it can obtain this title. IIHS evaluates how well a vehicle handles frontal crashes with the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap, and passenger-side small overlap tests as well as assessments on side crashes, roof strength, head restraints, and seats. As part of the qualification, vehicles must also earn an "Advanced" or "Superior" rating for front crash prevention along with an "Acceptable" or "Good" rating for headlights.

After six rigorous trials testing overall safety and responsiveness, the Mazda6 earned "Good" ratings in all of the IIHS crashworthiness evaluations.

Every Mazda6 now comes standard with Mazda i-Activsense safety features, including Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning with Lane-Keep Assist, Smart Brake Support, and Mazda Cruise Control.

"Mazda designs its vehicles with the driver in mind. Taking an active approach to safety gives the driver more peace of mind, which makes driving more fun," said Mazda President Jeff Guyton. "Confident driving is better driving, and the updates to the 2019 Mazda6 show Mazda's commitment to providing our customers with advanced safety technologies."

Several TOP SAFETY PICK winners come from the Mazda brand, including the 2019 Mazda3 Sedan and Hatch, the 2019 CX-3, the 2019 CX-9, and now the 2019 Mazda6, while the 2019 CX-5 received the higher-tier TOP SAFETY PICK+ award.

Interested buyers can purchase the Mazda6 with a starting MSRP of $23,800.
