The Mazda CX-9 crossover built after December 2019 has been awarded the 2020 Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)—the highest award available from the IIHS. This award has several other Mazda recipients as well, including the 2020 Mazda3 Sedan and Hatchback, CX-3, CX-5, and the Mazda6. All have earned this prestigious IIHS award, placing Mazda in a leading position within the industry with the most awards earned—more than any automaker—which is a significant and impressive accomplishment.
Mazda President Jeff Guyton reflected on the honor of receiving this award, stating that “our customers are at the forefront of our safety development,” and therefore, Mazda will continue to be “dedicated to providing the most advanced safety technologies to give our customers a more joyful and confident driving experience.”
There are several factors of the 2020 CX-9 that were considered to qualify for the Top Safety Pick+ award. The 2020 CX-9 earned good ratings in all six of the Institute’s crashworthiness evaluations. This includes roof strength, head restraints and seats, moderate overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, side, and driver-side small overlap front. In addition to the good ratings in the crashworthiness evaluations, the 2020 CX-9 also achieved a good headlight rating and earned advanced or superior ratings for its front crash prevention in both vehicle-to-pedestrian and vehicle-to-vehicle evaluations.
A series of advanced safety technologies, named i-Activsense, are featured on the 2020 CX-9 and make use of detection devices such as cameras and milliware radars. A powerful combination of helping the driver better recognize any potential hazards along with pre-crash safety technologies that help avert collisions, or in the worst-case scenario, reduce their severity where they cannot be avoided, creates safety technologies that support safer driving all around. This includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function, Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning System with Lane-Keep Assist, Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, High Beam Control, and Traffic Sign Recognition.
If you want to be extra safe on the roads, Mazda is the Top Safety Pick+.
