Last month, Mazda hosted a virtual premier of their new SUV, the CX-50. Mazda is already known for their strong line of SUVs, including the CX-5, CX-9, and the CX-30, among others. Manufactured at the new Mazda-Toyota joint facility in Huntsville, AL, this SUV is specifically designed to add a more rugged option to Mazda’s lineup, targeted at the busy outdoor lifestyles of American drivers.

Just like other Mazda models, it maintains the athletic handling and sporty driving dynamics that the brand has known for, but with added off-road capability. The standard i-Activ all-wheel drive and Mazda’s signature Mi-Drive mode selection will allow drivers to take on any condition with confidence. Whether you wish to drive off-road, in challenging weather, or tow something, the CX-50 has you covered. The SUV comes with a choice of two 2.0 liter engines, one turbocharged and one naturally aspirated. Both have enough oomph to power the CX-50 sufficiently, and are guided by a six-speed automatic transmission. In the coming years, Mazda also has plans to incorporate electric powertrains into this model.

Apart from its strong powertrain, it is also worth noting the CX-50’s beautiful design. Mazda’s Kodo design language has been lauded since its inception for beautiful, aggressive bodywork. This model combines Kodo design with impressive outdoor-inspired elements. Additionally, on the interior, they have even added a panoramic sunroof to provide passengers with natural light and a beautiful view  However, the brand has also ensured that form follows function. The car’s height and width have been optimized to make loading and unloading outdoor equipment a breeze. Additionally, roof rails, b-pillars, and door jambs will be high-strength to ensure easy securing of any equipment or ropes.

Looking at the CX-50, it is clear that this SUV represents a slightly new direction for Mazda. The automaker has maintained its reputation for quality and beautiful design, but added additional rugged capabilities to allow the CX-50 to go where no other Mazda has gone before.
