The IIHS, or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, is a governing body dedicated to evaluating cars based on their safety features and responses to crashes from various angles. For 2021, the only car to receive their highest side crash rating is the Mazda CX-5. Out of about 20 small SUVs, no others earned the ‘Good’ rating in IIHS’s new, tougher side crash test.
The Japanese automaker prides itself on superior quality, including safety features. Masaki Ueno, the brand’s Vice President of R&D, Design, and Quality Assurance, notes that “We have studied real-world crashes and used computer simulation to consider body structure and load paths, resulting in the robust design that has existed in the CX-5 since the 2017 model year.” By using advanced technology and analytics to optimize crash safety, Mazda has become an industry leader in protecting passengers from crashes at all angles. To simulate the toughest level of crash testing, Mazda used a heavier barrier traveling at a higher speed in its simulations to put the SUV through the most stringent testing possible. Only when it cleared this test did Mazda deem it fit to release on the market.
The CX-5 isn’t Mazda’s only class-leading vehicle for safety its other offerings that are also IIHS Top Safety Picks include the Mazda3 Sedan Hatchback, Mazda6, Mazda CX-3, Mazda CX-30, and CX-9. Evidently, Mazda’s priority on safety exists across the product line.
The Mazda CX-5 remains a commendable car apart from its safety features. Its sporty design turns heads wherever it goes, and its fun-to-drive nature sets it apart from some of the more staid offerings in the class. Additionally, efficient fuel economy and a comfortable, roomy interior make it the complete package for a small family or anyone who wants a vehicle that can do it all. If you want an enjoyable daily driver chock full of practicality, as well as superior peace of mind while driving it, it’s hard to do much better than the 2021 Mazda CX-5.
