Beginning in 2010, Mazda introduced a new design aesthetic called KODO—Soul of Motion. This year, at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda was able to showcase this new design philosophy through the introduction of two new concept models: the Mazda KAI CONCEPT and the Mazda VISION COUPE.
The all-new KAI CONCEPT is a compact hatchback that has the latest and the greatest Mazda has to offer: this includes the next-generation SKYACTIV-X gasoline engine and SKYACTIV-Vehicle Architecture, which both create a quieter, comfortable ride while enhancing the vehicle’s performance.
In keeping with the KODO design scheme, the KAI CONCEPT is accented with muscular and solid proportions, while still having a sleek, flowy body. Mazda has worked to remove anything that they deem unnecessary from the car, giving the exterior a reflective, polished look, and the cabin a clean, uncluttered feeling.
Mazda’s second vehicle to be debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show, the VISION COUPE, also adheres to the new KODO design. The VISION COUPE’s sleek exterior is apparent before even entering the car and immediately suggests speed and relaxation. The minimalist design is meant to calm the driver, and the interior’s design aims to make the car feel like a part of the driver’s body, creating an intelligent and natural driving experience.
Similarly, virtually every aspect of the VISION COUPE’s interior, from the center console to the door trim to the instrument panel, intersects with the other, creating a sense of openness. Through this open space, unmediated driving experience, and enhanced visibility in the car’s cabin, Mazda has completely changed the driving experience, breaking down barriers between the driver and the road.
Through the new KODO design philosophy and two new, impressive debuts, Mazda is continuing to redefine themselves as a brand that values power, beauty, and intuition by privileging symmetry, serenity, and simplicity.
